This webinar highlights new research from the MIT Sloan Health Systems Initiative (HSI) that integrates advanced health analytics and behavioral science to help large, self-insured employers improve employee health and productivity.

Before MIT, Jim was the assistant dean of research business development at the UMass Amherst College of Information and Computer Sciences. Jim founded, built, and sold multiple technology companies in fintech and online media. He has bootstrapped startups and closed venture capital, angel, and private equity funding rounds. Jim also served as the Chief Operating Officer of a public company and a subsidiary of Pitney Bowes. He began his career at AT&T as a software developer, hardware engineer, and national account manager. Jim has authored patents and wrote one of the first books on Java programming. Out of all the roles he's held, Jim's favorite job title by far is dedicated dad of four. He earned a BS from Manhattan College and an MBA with concentrations in finance and international business from New York University.

Joseph Doyle is the Erwin H. Schell Professor of Management and Applied Economics at the MIT Sloan School of Management.

He studies public economics in the areas of healthcare and child welfare. His healthcare research investigates sources of value and waste to inform policies aimed at improving the quality and cost-effectiveness of the US healthcare system. This includes partnering with large healthcare providers and payers to conduct randomized controlled trials of changes in the ways healthcare is delivered with an emphasis on addressing social determinants of health. In his child welfare research, he typically uses large-scale administrative datasets and either randomized or quasi-randomized evaluations to study the effects of foster care and juvenile justice policies on child well-being.  

Doyle is faculty director of the MIT Sloan Health Systems Initiative, co-chair of the Health Sector of the Jameel Poverty Action Lab, and Co-Principal Investigator of the NBER Roybal Center for Behavior Change in Health.

He holds a BS from Cornell University and a PhD in economics from the University of Chicago.

Joe Doyle will discuss efforts to apply behavioral economics to increase engagement with wellness programs, with the goal of better understanding their effectiveness in improving employee health and productivity.

Ioan Bolohan is Vice President of Strategy and Marketing at Well Dot Inc, a role he has held since June 2019. Prior to joining Well, he earned his MBA from Harvard Business School, where he also served as a Business Teaching Fellow from 2018 to 2020. Earlier in his career, he was a Senior Business Analyst at McKinsey & Company from 2015 to 2018, following a summer internship with the firm in 2014.

From 2008 to 2015, Bolohan served as Director of Marketing for Bolohan Enterprises, a small business in North Carolina’s Research Triangle Park. There, he led marketing campaigns, identified opportunities for growth, and supported daily operations. He has also held academic and nonprofit roles, including work as a Research Analyst, Teaching Assistant, and MBA Tutor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and as Program Director and Outreach Coordinator at the Amy Biehl Foundation Trust in South Africa.

Bolohan holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Political Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Over the past decade, Angel Enrique has dedicated his career to the research and practical implementation of digital mental health interventions in real-world settings. His professional journey spans Ireland, the UK, the USA, and Spain, blending academic expertise with industry experience.

He currently serves as Senior Manager – Digital Health Scientist at Amwell, where he leads the generation of evidence for several SilverCloud® by Amwell programs across various geographies. As a member of the research leadership team, he contributes to shaping the scientific strategy and vision of the Amwell Science team. He also works cross-functionally with other business areas, applying scientific insights to inform strategy and engaging with prospects and customers as a subject matter expert.

Angel’s academic background combines Health Psychology and Clinical Psychology, culminating in a PhD specializing in Digital Mental Health Interventions. He earned his doctorate from Universitat Jaume I (Castellón, Spain), where he was part of LABPSITEC (Psychology and Technology Lab)—a pioneering research group in the development of digital therapies for mental health conditions.

This academic foundation has equipped Angel with the tools to challenge conventions, drive innovation, and advocate for the advancement of digital mental health solutions.

Research Findings that Improve Digital Mental Health Provision
Brian Liu

Brian Liu is a fourth-year PhD candidate in the Operations Research Center at MIT, advised by Professor Rahul Mazumder. His research sits at the intersection of statistical machine learning and discrete optimization, with a focus on developing efficient and explainable algorithms for data science and machine learning. He is also interested in creating interpretable ML methods for applications in healthcare and public policy.

Before pursuing his PhD, Brian worked as a Data and Applied Scientist at Microsoft, where he focused on online advertising. He is originally from the San Francisco Bay Area.

Brian will describe the initial research collaboration between MIT Sloan HSI and Amwell Silvercloud, utilizing health analytics to enhance engagement and effectiveness.
