SEAri Research Structures

The Systems Engineering Advancement Research Initiative (SEAri) is structured with four interacting "clusters" that mirror the scientific method as applied to the study of advanced systems engineering.

V-STARS and R-STARS -- The V-STARS and R-STARS clusters conduct normative research, developing models and theories of systems engineering, especially as related to design and development of complex socio-technical systems. V-STARS approaches the research from a benefit, or "value", generating perspective, typically in terms of benefit criteria in the views of system stakeholders. Example research topics include Dynamic Multi-Attribute Tradespace Exploration, Design for Value Robustness, and Tradespace Visualization for Decision Makers. R-STARS approaches the research from a cost, or more generally, "resource" constrained perspective, typically assessing how to more effectively account for or expend limited resources in systems engineering. Example research includes systems engineering cost modeling, uncertainty assessment and management using system portfolios, and the application of real options "in" complex systems. Natural counterpoints in tension, V-STARS and R-STARS taken together provide a balanced perspective for Socio-Technical Architecting of Systems.

SE-Field -- The SE-Field cluster straddles both academia and "real world", pursuing empirically relevant studies that both motivate and validate the theoretical work being conducted in the other clusters. SE-Field ensures that SEAri pursues relevant, impactful research. Example research topics include collaborative distributed systems engineering practices, identifying leading indicators for system success or failure, and identifying barriers and precursors to systems thinking in individuals and organizations.
SE-Synthesis

The SE-Synthesis cluster synthesizes research insights from the other three clusters in order to make education and policy recommendations to SEAri stakeholders. The cluster ensures that SEAri research remains coherent and impactful to academia, industry, and government. SE-Synthesis plays a critical leadership role for knowledge deployment and long-range research planning.

Knowledge Deployment -- A critical part of the SEAri research structure is interaction with systems leadership, practitioners and policy-makers. Workshops and tutorials form the basis of formal exchange with industry and government. Additionally, publications will be developed for both the academic and practitioner communities. SE-Field will conduct research with both academic and practitioner partners to ensure broad and grounded research. Input from knowledge deployment will motivate and validate the STARS clusters.
