Perron Group: Earth and Planetary Surface Processes

Principal Investigator J Perron

Project Website http://mit.edu/perron/www/

The MIT Surface Processes Group works to discover the physical processes that shape landscapes on Earth and other planets. We use a variety of tools, including field measurements, computational models, laboratory experiments, and remote sensing observations from airborne platforms and spacecraft missions. In most of our projects, we compare quantitative models with field or laboratory measurements.

The Perron seeks a quantitative understanding of the processes that create landscapes. In addition to landscapes on Earth, we study the surfaces of other planets and moons, including Mars and Titan. The approach combines theory and modeling, field and remote sensing observations, data from planetary missions, and laboratory experiments. Nearly all of our projects are aligned with one of three main themes: landscape patterns, climate and landscape evolution, and planetary surfaces.
