Offshore Renewable Energy Storage Project

Principal Investigator Alexander Slocum

Co-investigator James Kirtley

Project Start Date July 2011

Project End Date
 January 2014

As part of the Precision Engineering Research Group PREG), We are developing a new type of pumped hydro system to store grid-scale amounts of energy in the ocean depths. As larger and larger wind turbines are built and placed further and further offshore, the deep waters below them provide the opportunity to store energy the energy they produce. Combined with this storage, wind energy will be transformed from an unreliable source to a utility grade base-load provider of power.
