Laboratory for Advanced Biomaterials and Stem-Cell-Based Therapeutics (Karp Lab)

Principal Investigator Jeffrey Karp

Current tissue engineering strategies are taking far too long to reach the clinic. We have a moral obligation not only to solve problems that can benefit patients of the future but also to develop strategies that can rapidly be translated to the clinic to help patients today.

The lab aims to create advanced biomaterials and devices for therapeutics through a highly multidisciplinary approach. Through working at the interface of material science, biology, engineering, and medicine, the highly interactive and collaborative group engages outstanding scientists and clinicians at MIT, Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Massachusetts General Hospital, and other surrounding hospitals and institutions. A major focus of the group is the study and development of polymers and stem cells for addressing the biggest limitations in engineering replacement tissues and organs. A high priority of our group is to involve clinicians who regularly encounter the problems we aim to solve.

The lab is dedicated to the development of next generation bioengineers to work at the forefront of regenerative medicine. Specific interests include: development of polymeric devices and stem-cell-based therapeutics to address key limitations in engineering replacement tissues and organs as well as biomimetic devices for cancer therapy and regenerative medicine.
