Predicting the Shear Viscosity of a Supercooled Liquid

Principal Investigator Sidney Yip

We present a quantitative first-principles viscosity theory that can capture the rapid increase of viscosity in a supercooled liquid. The method is based on a two-step energy landscape mapping. The first mapping is from the temperature to the average inherent structure energy; the second is from the average inherent structure energy to the average activation barrier. The results indicates the existance of a generic strong-fragile-strong crossover in all supercooled liquids.
