MIT Project on Society, Business and the Environment (MIT-SBE)

Principal Investigator Lawrence Susskind

he MIT Project on Society, Business and the Environment (MIT-SBE) hosts a variety of domestic and international research projects and educational activities, all of which focus on how business can become more sustainable. The projects, courses, and seminars affiliated with MIT-SBE are distinguished by their commitment to two underlying premises. The first is that a healthy, resilient natural environment imposes fundamental limits on the nature and extent of commercial activity that is desirable. The second is that government oversight and stakeholder monitoring are necessary to ensure that business achieves socially equitable and environmentally sustainable outcomes. The goal of MIT-SBE research and education activities is to advance theory and generate practical insights into the kinds of government and stakeholder activity that are most likely to promote environmentally sustainable business.
