Ocean Science and Engineering Research at MIT Mechanical Engineering

Principal Investigator Dick Yue

Co-investigators J Vandiver , Pierre Lermusiaux , Nicholas Makris

The Ocean area seeks to better understand, protect, and utilize the oceans, which cover more than 70% of the earth’s surface.

Operating in the ocean is demanding because of the hostile wave environment, extreme pressures, and the limited ability to sustain high data-rate communications. The ocean interior is under-sampled both temporally and spatially, and, as a result, forecasting the ocean environment is challenging.

Research Includes: Acoustics, instrumentation, sensing, marine robotics, and ocean predictions; hydrodynamics; structural mechanics and dynamics; and design, naval construction, and engineering.
