Research Summary

In cryobiology, Professor Toner’s research focuses on the physiochemical aspects of freezing cells and engineered tissues, including skin substitutes and engineered liver tissue. In tissue engineering, his primary interest is the development of a bioartificial liver-assist system. In microsystems bioengineering, Professor Toner uses tools developed for the microelectronics industry in order to microfabricate tissue equivalents with precise structural and cellular microenvironments. His diverse research interests in cell and tissue engineering, preservation, and repair have helped build strong alliances with the biotechnology industry.
