Research Summary

Dr. Jantarakasem is a postdoctoral associate working with Professor Amos Winter. He is leading problem scoping and identifying research opportunities in clean water and food security, particularly in resource-limited settings. Jantarakasem is working on behalf of his team to initiate a new water project and research trajectory for the K. Lisa Yang Global Engineering and Research (GEAR) Center. The projects will eventually be carried out by incoming PhD students who will be joining me at the GEAR Center.

Dr. Jantarakasem's research background is in water and wastewater treatment, as well as water quality monitoring. He received a PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Imperial College London. Before joining MIT, he was a research engineer at the NUS-Sembcorp Corporate Laboratory, where he worked on patented hazardous wastewater treatment technologies for the petrochemical industry. Jantarakasem was supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Innovative Asia Scholarship. He also gained experience working with the National Institute of Public Health in Japan and with Tokyo Waterworks.

The GEAR Center has extensive experience in identifying compelling challenges and the associated scientific knowledge gaps in resource-constrained communities, then addressing them through academic innovation to develop and translate transformative technologies. Some of the research includes ultra-low-pressure, low-cost drip emitters in Jordan; household- and community-scale desalination systems in India; and high-performance, affordable passive prosthetic feet in India.
