Research Summary

Dr. Chatterjee's research interests include igneous and metamorphic petrology and geochemistry. He has studied the geochemical variations in the Deccan flood basalts of the Indian peninsula to understand the chemical evolution of the volcanoes that erupted roughly 65 million years ago and coincided with the extinction of the dinosaurs. His recent research involves the study of high-grade metamorphic belts of Eastern India and their significance in Proterozoic supercontinent assembly and break-up. He is currently studying the eclogites of the India-Asia collision zone to understand the conditions of plate subduction and continental collision.
