The Masic Group at MIT focuses on the characterization of complex biomineralized and archaeological structural materials with the objective to inspire the design of more sustainable and durable building materials. To achieve these goals, we have developed unique advanced multiscale experimental approaches to characterize in situ material properties, intricate structure-chemistry-function relationships, and the consequences associated with their interactions with the external environments.
In January 2016, we completed the construction and installation of a state of the art multi-functional and multiscale materials characterization platform, which combines large area polarized Raman chemical imaging, AFM, fluorescence, and in situ mechanical testing in controlled environments.
