Susan Solomon, and Noelle Selin of earth, atmospheric and planetary sciences have developed new insights into how energy-related emissions form fine airborne particles that damage human health, and they have demonstrated a new way to design emissions-control measures specially tailored to reduce particulate pollution in a specific location.
