The Poetic Justice group creates work with rhythm and harmony that extends our perceptions and exposes the social-political systems affecting us as individuals through code-switching content, form, context, and function. We’re interested in working towards:
(*) Using art representations and interventions for problem-finding and interventions for solution-finding(*) Merging life experiences and data studies, feeling and facts, poetic acts and analytic insights, function and form, aesthetic quality and social efficacy(*) Manipulating the vocabularies of multiple disciplines including art, design, architecture, performance, and technology as a poetic languages(*) Developing the capacity for resistance and resilience intellectually, emotionally and spiritually(*) Collaborating with organizations, communities, and individuals
In 2013, writer Quinn Norton said: “Right now, my field must tackle describing a world where falling in love, going to war and filling out tax forms looks the same; it looks like typing.” Through producing interdisciplinary works that embody our human conditions, we engage people in social transformation; imagining and realizing change.
Some of the first projects from The Poetic Justice group include The Green Book Project (working title) and The Scream Project (working title). The Green Book Project will be a series of publications and interactive installations which reimagine the Negro Motorist Green Book for “traveling while Black” in this era of “New Jim Crows.” The Scream Project will be a series of publications and interactive installations which revive the Teotihuacan folklore/ritual of women practicing catharsis in the pyramids to contemporary urban spaces.
