How Frequently Are Evolutionary Adaptations Reversible?

Principal Investigator Jeff Gore

If an evolutionary adaptation to one environment decreases fitness in some other environment, it may be possible for evolution in this second environment to lead to an evolutionary "reversal". We have used mutations in beta-lactamase to measure evolutionary reversibility in the face of different antibiotic treatments. We have also used a computational approach to demonstrate that slowly switching between environments increases reversibility for small populations.
