Woodrow Wilson Academy of Teaching and Learning

The WW Academy is both a graduate school and a laboratory. Incubated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the WW Academy is embedded in the greater Boston area, and will work with the area’s public school systems. The WW Academy will initially offer competency-based master’s degree programs in middle and secondary math and science (STEM) teacher education, with school leadership programs being added after the teacher education program is fully operational. It will in the future add professional development programs and serve as an examining and certification center for teacher and school leader licensure.

The MIT Teaching Systems Lab supports the Woodrow Wilson Academy of Teaching and Learning through a variety of research and design projects. We provide consultation on the design of the WW Academy’s hybrid and competency based learning experiences. We are developing a series of game- and simulation-based approaches to allow teacher candidates to explore key decisions that teachers make in the classroom every day. Working with partners throughout MIT, we are codifying the design principles that define the minds-on, hands-on undergraduate educational experience at MIT and exploring how to translate those principles in to K-12 education.
