Metals and Minerals for the Environment

Metals and minerals are at the core of mankind’s existence - vital for infrastructure, transportation and myriad consumer goods - and have been identified as key materials for meeting sustainable development and renewable energy goals. Paradoxically, this intense demand for metals and minerals has propagated the Anthropocene age, with exceptional – and growing -- local and global environmental impacts.

Founded in 2015, Metals and Minerals for the Environment (MME) is a forum for industry and academia to shape a more sustainable future for the metals and minerals industry. Complex life cycles spanning global geographies creates a web of impacts and interactions that requires a multi-disciplinary approach to affect change.

The goal of the MME is to promote in-depth interactions between industry and academia. We are bringing together world-renowned leaders to approach the issues relevant to the metal and mineral life cycle from a multi-disciplinary perspective.

Collectively, they will leverage their existing research portfolio and work with industry partners to provide real-world applications to drive environmental and social improvements. Close collaborations between MIT researchers and industry will help to shape real-world applications and drive substantive impact.
