The Minor in Applied International Studies is designed to help students integrate a practical, applied international experience into a coherent course of study. The minor is built around four key principles:
(*) local understanding with a global perspective(*) theory combined with in-the-field experience(*) applied cross-cultural communication skills(*) independent research skills
The result is a comprehensive plan of study that allows students to gain the skills necessary for a productive, sustainable career in the global economy.
Requirements for the Minor have been revised, please note new requirements below. Students with Minor application approval dates prior to June 2012 may use the former requirements for the minor. Students who decide to minor academic year 2012-2013 may use either set of requirements. Students applying for the minor beginning academic year 2013-2014 must fulfill the new requirements.
The MAIS consists of six academic subjects arranged into three areas, Language and Culture, International Politics, Economics & History, International Experience, coupled with an experience abroad. Students must demonstrate proficiency in at least one foreign language. Students can satisfy the requirements by choosing from a wide array of subjects that either focus on a chosen geographical area or provide a comparative approach to issues of interest. Qualifying courses will be determined with the help of the advisor.
