This research is tackling the traditional pest-control challenges facing Indian beekeepers, as well as mitigate the effects of colony collapse disorder by decreasing stresses on bee colonies from pests.
Common pests include mites, moths, ants, wasps, and birds, with the latter two being particularly challenging to Indian beekeepers. Current pest control methods include traffic restricting entrance reducers for beehives and harmful pesticides, though current designs have proved inadequate. This research approaches pest control problems from a mechanical and electrical engineering perspective. This unique perspective, as well as close collaboration with beekeepers and bee researchers, is central to the theme of making breakthrough beekeeping technology.
Ultimately, this technology should be created locally and disseminated through beekeeping trainers, NGOs, and government organizations.
