The Effect of Our Environment (Physical, Social) on Health

Principal Investigator Richard Fletcher

Flether is interested in studying how the spaces in which we live and work affect physical and mental health.

(*) Physical Environment -- Many aspects of our physical environment, including air pollution, lighting, and sound, have each been shown to have an impact on our physiology and health. These factors can also be considered in the architectural design and city design.

(*) Social Environment -- The frequency, mode, and affect of our social interactions (live conversation vs phone vs online) are also factors which can have positive or negative effects on health. These factors can be mediated through design of our work and living spaces as well as mobility systems.

(*) Differential Vulnerability -- The impact of the environment on our health is highly idiosyncratic, depending on individual factors such as genetic predisposition, co-morbidities, and emotional mood.
