Design Strategies for Very High Data Rate Short Range Wireless Communication Links


High-speed wireless data communication will be an essential technology for future portable devices and will require a substantial increase in data throughput over the current state of the art. This work will investigate design strategies to enable short-range (<3m) wireless communication links with data rates greater than 10Gbps operating at mm-wave frequencies. It will address the limitations of the state of the art phased array receivers using numerous techniques including a novel approach to beam forming. We expect that these techniques will allow us to significantly improve the 0.4nJ/bit figure of merit of existing systems.

This research is on the leading edge of the utilization of advanced electronic devices for very high-speed systems that are at the same time low power. It will contribute towards to the mission of the university of becoming a regional and global center of excellence in Microsystems. It also has direct relevance to the suppliers of high quality video products, as it will provide wireless connectivity for future very high-definition video systems.
