Metallic Open Nanofoams

Principal Investigator Michael J Demkowicz

Nanoporous metals, which are formed by corrosion of alloys, can be used in applications requiring strong, yet light-weight materials. Nanoporous metals are formed by corrosion of an alloy. Two important questions need to be answered in understanding nanoporous metals:

(1) How are nanoporous metals formed?
(2) How can their structural integrity maintained under mechanical load?

With gold as the model system, we seek to elucidate the mechanisms of formation of nanoporous metals, gain insights into their microstructure, and understand their response to mechanical load through atomistic simulations.
