Master of Science in Real Estate Development (MSRED)

Principal Investigator Marion Cunningham

MIT's Master of Science in Real Estate Development (MSRED) is the most concentrated, science-based graduate degree in real estate available. Launched in 1983 by the MIT Center for Real Estate, the MSRED is the first on-year degree of its kind, fulfilling a need for specialized education beyond the scope of the traditional M.B.A. The MSRED prepares men and women to compete in the global market with superior qualifications -- providing the research-based expertise necessary to solve complex problems in contemporary real estate. Core curriculum includes: Real Estate Finance & Investment, Real Estate Economics, Real Estate Development, real Estate Capital Markets, complex urban projects. Approximately 25-30 students are accepted each year. It is required that applicants have a minimum of 3 years of full-time work experience in some area of the real estate industry. Approximately 40% of Center for Real Estate graduates enter roles in project management for development projects. They are typically hired as project managers and assistant project managers. Twenty percent go into finance and investments and the balance go into other areas in the real estate industry such as asset management consulting, corporate real estate, entrepreneurship, research and advisory services. Since CRE students come to the program with 3 or more years of real estate experience (the average age is 30), their title depends on their level of experience.
