Design, Optimization and Uncertainty Quantification

Principal Investigator Qiqi Wang

As today's aerospace vehicles and systems getting more and more complex, there is an increasing need for using computers not only to simulate these systems but also to help design them. We use computational tools to model design objective functions and constraints as functions in the high dimensional design space, and determine how the design variables can be changed to improve the performance while satisfying the constraints. We also analyze the effect of uncertainties in operating conditions, downstream design modifications, manufacturing processes, as well as inaccuracies in the computational models used. This analysis enables us to design for robustness with respect to these uncertainties.
