MIT Science of Baseball Program (MSBP)

Principal Investigator Eboney Hearn

The MIT Science of Baseball Program (MSBP), a four-week summer program, is aimed at improving the mathematics and science skills of entering eighth and ninth grade boys who attend Boston and Cambridge public schools by building on their interest in baseball to learn physics and math. This summer, MSBP will provide opportunities for 30-40 boys, who demonstrate a passion for baseball and an interest in academic improvement.

The program will feature an integrated, experiential curriculum, including both academic and athletic components that exploit the natural connections between student experiences and academic topics. Participating students will learn to master a number of statistical operations that will be used throughout. They will collect numerical data at every opportunity and use it to describe their experiences.

The objectives of MSBP are to:

(*) Help students become actively involved in their own learning, particularly in mathematics and physics,
(*) Focus on the learning process by comparing the acquisition of baseball skills with academic skills development,
(*) Learn basic baseball and academic skills, and
(*) Have fun!!!

In partnership with families, schools, little league clubs, and other community-based organizations, MSBP strives to spark a passion for science in students by approaching them through a sport they love, baseball. The program is offered free of charge to participants through the generous support of sponsors and MIT.
