MIT's Global Studies and Languages (GSL) administers the annual January Scholars in France program. January Scholars in France gives MIT undergraduate students a tutored cultural immersion in Paris during IAP, focusing on French arts, letters, theater, and history.

In creating this program, the section's objective was to give especially motivated students an enlightening and yet very different addition to their MIT education. Activities have included such events as attending plays, movies, concerts and operas, viewing permanent and special exhibits at art and history museums, exploring hidden places in Paris as well as the better known ones, attending public and university-based lectures on cultural issues, and meeting French people. Students meet on a regular basis with the program director for group discussion and reflection on the works and events explored.

GSL invites undergraduates to apply for the program. Ten students will be selected to experience two weeks of tutored immersion in the cultural life of Paris. Airfare, lodging, guided tours, and field trips costs are covered by MIT.

Applications are open to MIT undergraduates who have completed French IV or above at MIT. The award will be based on a demonstrated commitment to French Studies at MIT. Preference will be given to French minors and concentrators.
