Self-Assembly of Oppositely Charged Colloids

Principal Investigator W Carter

Co-investigator Yet-Ming Chiang

Oppositely charged colloidal-particles undergo rapid coagulation in the absence of any repulsive component in the interaction potential. Moreover when the magnitude of surface charge density is very large, it has proven extremely difficult to produce extended ordered regions from such particles. A fast and efficient layer-by-layer technique for production of ordered regions from high charge-density oppositely charged particles is demonstrated. This method works for a range of charge density and size ratios. The poster will show the experimental setup and show calculations that this layer-by-layer technique can produce long-range ordering.
