Insights into Protein Hydration Water

Principal Investigator Sow-Hsin Chen

The role of hydration water in biomacromolecular structure and functionality was investigated using both Neutron Scattering techniques and Computer Simulations to get atomic-level insights into the relationship between the dynamics of water molecules surrounding proteins or DNA and the activity of the biomacromolecule. In particular, the object of this research is the dynamical transition observed experimentally in hydrated proteins at 220K, that thanks to Neutron Scattering experiments has been recognized as a fragile-to-strong crossover.
