Climate Savers Computing Initiative

Principal Investigator Leon Glicksman

Started by Google and Intel in 2007, the Climate Savers Computing Initiative is a nonprofit group of eco-conscious consumers, businesses and conservation organizations. The Initiative was started in the spirit of WWF’s Climate Savers program which has mobilized over a dozen companies since 1999 to cut carbon dioxide emissions, demonstrating that reducing emissions is good business. Our goal is to promote development, deployment and adoption of smart technologies that can both improve the efficiency of a computer’s power delivery and reduce the energy consumed when the computer is in an inactive state. \t

Computer and computer component manufacturers who support the initiative are committed to building energy-efficient products that meet or surpass the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star® guidelines. Businesses must also commit to requiring high-efficiency systems for the majority of their corporate desktop PCs and volume server purchases and to deploy and use power management tools on desktop PCs.

The Initiative is also a resource for consumers and IT personnel who want to learn more about power management of computers, and it helps individuals reduce the electrical footprint of their computers -- without any resulting loss of productivity.

The goal is to save $5.5 billion in energy costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 54 million tons per year.Led by Intel and Google, the Climate Savers Computing Initiative aims to save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by setting aggressive new targets for energy-efficient computers and components and promoting the adoption of energy-efficient computers and power management tools worldwide.\t

Anyone can be part of the Initiative:

Affiliate Member -- Affiliate membership is free for companies and individuals willing to pledge their support for the Climate Savers Computing Initiative. \t
\t
Associate Member -- Associate membership has an annual fee and is for manufacturers committing to produce systems and components that meet or exceed the efficiency standards published each year by the Initiative. \t

Advisors -- Advisors pay no annual fee. The Advisor membership class is open to non-profit environmental organizations and government agencies. \t
\t
The Climate Savers Computing Initiative would like to work with organizations to help educate both consumer and corporate purchasers about the advantages of high efficiency systems.
