Cambridge-MIT Exchange (CME)

Since its inception in 2000, more than 600 students have participated in the Cambridge-MIT Exchange (CME), an undergraduate student exchange program between MIT and the University of Cambridge in England. CME gives MIT juniors in most academic departments the opportunity to study for a full academic year, and it is designed so that students earn a full year of transfer credit, allowing them to graduate on time.

Academic Advantages -- Cambridge’s learning environment is very different than MIT, offering students a more independent learning style and a broader academic perspective. As a result, students often return to MIT as more independent learners, inspired with greater confidence and many new skills, including adapting more effectively in new situations.

Graduate School and Career Advantages -- CME alumni who go on to graduate school, including medical and law schools, often credit the exchange for helping them prepare for the increased self-discipline required to succeed in these graduate programs. Many former participants now working assert that CME enhanced their resumes

Other Advantages -- CME participants gain a lot by living in Cambridge itself. MIT students live in one of the university’s 31 colleges and become part of a diverse community that includes students in many fields not offered at the Institute. Many MIT students also join clubs, societies, and extra-curricular activities during the year. In addition to exploring the beautiful historic city of Cambridge (founded in 875), students are less than an hour from London and at the gateway to Europe.
