U2U is part of the International Development Initiative, which is jointly sponsored by the PSC and Edgerton Center. Harvard Medical School faculty and students also partner on this initiative, which also involves students from the University of Zambia, and will someday involve partnerships with other third-world universities. The program just had a pilot last year, so it’s small: 3-4 MIT students have been involved each summer (e.g. 2 undergraduate, one graduate student). The students travel with faculty or staff and work with community organizations on-site, but they decide their own projects and work in teams to complete them. Internships:Locally centered. The aim is to work with indigenous communities fairly near a third-world university, so the local university can carry on the work after the summer.
