The factors which influence uptake and accumulation of these cholesterol-carrying molecules are studied with in vivo and cell-culture experiments and with models developed for evaluating transport and metabolic parameters. Of special interest are "hot spots" of high permeability and accumulation which may predispose to development of atherosclerotic plaque.
