Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP)

Principal Investigator Jana Tarasenko

In January 2008, IS&T launched the project to transition the campus to MITvoip (MIT Voice Over Internet Protocol). The MITvoip production service is MIT's main IP-based voice service intended to replace traditional ISDN phone service as currently used by MIT departments, labs, and centers. IS&T is responsible for supporting all aspects of the service from the infrastructure to the telephone devices used by staff and faculty. The majority of the campus migrated to MITvoip in August 2009. All new building construction and any new customer requests will be completed using MITvoip. Learn more about MITvoip.

The MITvoip infrastructure is augmented by an interoperable, open infrastructure that will provide a flexible platform for innovation, application development, and experiments in integrated communications. If the MITvoip production service does not meet your needs, but you are interested in voice over IP, contact the Voip Transition team at voip-transition-team@mit.edu. There may be additional options available to experimenters and early adopters.

What is the service focus of MITvoip?

(*) Well-known, well-understood environment
(*) Replacement for utility phone service
(*) Voice-only services, to be expanded to other media over time
(*) Emergency calling to MIT police
