We believe it is possible to use modern technology to help young people connect better with the places where they live. To this end, we are developing "What's Up?", a telephone-based, neighborhood news system that will make it easier for youth to collect, share, and analyze information about personally meaningful places, people, and opportunities in their neighborhoods. We expect that appropriate use of the "What's Up?" system will help to increase awareness of and accessibility to important local youth resources, provide youth with opportunities to express their opinions about the places where they live and, with that, contribute to the development of communities that are both friendlier and empowering for young people.
