Research in the MIT Dry Fluids Laboratory combines theory, experiment, and simulation with the aim of developing new mathematical models for granular materials. We focus on diffusion and mixing in the poorly understood regime of slow, dense flow, which exhibits fundamentally different behavior than in normal fluids due to long-lasting contacts and strong many-body interactions.
