Interdisciplinary Science Outreach Proposal

Principal Investigator Chryssostomos Chryssostomidis

Project Start Date February 2010

Project End Date
 January 2014

This project will emphasize an interdisciplinary science approach while working with coastal communities and marine industries to continue the development of appropriate uses of resources. The objectives are to: (1) Create a climate change outreach and education program in collaboration with other NOAA offices, to help coastal communities, managers, and marine industries prepare for future impacts of climate change, such as increased storm frequency and intensity, warming ocean temperatures, ocean acidification, and sea level rise. (2) Characterize pollutant loads (e.g. nutrients, heavy metals, or organic compounds) coming off of terrestrial surfaces such as roads, parking lots, and other urban or suburban landscape features. Identify the fate of these contaminants in the coastal ocean, and work with state and local offices to reduce pollutant loads through source control and structural best management practices.
