MIT-Japan Program (MISTI)

Principal Investigator Richard Samuels

Co-investigator Christine Pilcavage

When the MIT-Japan Program was established in 1981, only a handful of American scientists and engineers could read research reports in Japanese, then walked into a Japanese laboratory, asked questions, and obtained information directly from Japanese sources.

With the third-largest economy in the world, Japan is now home to thriving automotive, robotics, ICT, video game, transportation and heavy machinery industries.

Each year through the MIT-Japan Program, 30 to 40 MIT students intern and conduct research in Japanese companies, universities and research institutes. The MIT-Japan Hayashi Seed Fund facilitates dozens of research collaborations between MIT faculty and their Japanese counterparts. Our partners are leading Japanese companies, universities and research organizations.
