Mitigation of Groundwater-Derived Arsenic Hazards and Sustainable Water Supply System in Asian Countries

Principal Investigator Harold Hemond

Co-investigator Charles Harvey

Project Start Date January 2002

Based on successful achievements of this team's previous AGS project, this new project will focus on mitigation of arsenic (As) hazards from an interdisciplinary viewpoint and target not only Bangladesh (the most severely affected country and the area studied in the ongoing project) but also Nepal (a country, from which arsenic hazards have recently been observed). This project has three major purposes. The first is to apply the mitigation trials for a larger number of local communities and to examine their effects through follow-up surveys in Bangladesh. The second is to expand the current research to the Terai districts of Nepal by applying the appropriate methods which have been developed in Bangladesh. The third is to continuously expand networking and to educate young scientists from developing Asian countries.
