MIT Freshman/Alumni Summer Internship Program (F/ASIP)

Principal Investigator Tamara Menghi

In 1997, MIT's Freshman/Alumni Summer Internship Program (F/ASIP) began with 20 students, a group of committed alumni and Professor Arthur Steinberg's vision. Today, F/ASIP is one of MIT's premier programs with nearly 100 students participating and internship opportunities not only across the country but around the world. F/ASIP is a truly unique program that provides training to first year students on how to get internships that first summer and how to be successful at those internships once they get there.

F/ASIP is a 6-unit graded seminar exclusively for freshmen. As a first-year student, this seminar will help you cultivate your professional skills, assist with finding an internship, and pair students with an MIT alumna/us while interning at their company. Alumni share with you a learning-by-doing philosophy, a propensity for hard work, and methods for tackling difficult problems. They also help educate freshman on what it takes to survive and thrive in the workplace.

It is important to note that participating in F/ASIP does not guarantee a summer internship. F/ASIP merely provides the opportunity and training to connect with employers. The goal is to teach valuable career planning and job search skills that will be usefu throughout life. To prepare students for summer internship, F/ASIP conducts a series of mandatory seminars in the fall and spring semesters, preceding the summer internship. Work will be on several topics such as: Communication Skills, Leadership Development, Effective Teamwork, Resume Writing, Interviewing Skills, and Networking. Students will also be required to complete assignments targeted to improve oral and written communication skills.
