Globalization and Local Governance

This research project studies the impact of economic and political globalization on local governance structures in 6 countries in South Asia and Southeast Asia.

The project investigates the paradox that increasing globalization is coinciding with an increase in the assertion of local democracy, autonomy and federalism in several countries. This has occurred in both rural and urban areas. It seeks to study the actual workings of local governance institutions to examine the impact of globalization through an analytical framework that takes global normative and institutional processes and social movement actions seriously.
