Mass-Spectrometry for In Situ Chemical Measurement

Principal Investigator Harold Hemond

The object of this research is the development of an instrument for in situ chemical measurements of water, based on membrane inlet mass spectrometry. The concepts have been demonstrated in the laboratory, and two field instruments have been under test; one is backpack-portable. An algorithm for mass spectrum separation has been developed. Current emphasis is on design and construction of a prototype for the use aboard an autonomous underwater vehicle.
