Nanostructured Surfaces for Improved Hemocompatability

Altering surface structure at a very small scale can dramatically change its wetting characteristics. For instance, by appropriately nano-structuring a slightly hydrophobic surface, we can make it extremely hydrophobic.

This research is aimed at extending the effect of nano-structuring from the fluid domian to the bio-chemical domain. We are investigating the use of nano-structured surfaces to reduce the coagulation of blood proteins on the surface. This will, in turn, reduce blood clotting on the surface and therefore increase the hemocompatability of the surface.
