Materials Processing Center (MPC) Industry Collegium

Principal Investigator Mark Beals

The Industry Collegium of the Materials Processing Center (MPC) provides a proactive forum where people from industry and MIT can work as partners in exploring and pursuing innovative materials processing reasearch and development. The MPC Industry Collegium expands on MIT's traditionally close ties with industry by providing a direct link between materials research here and the short-, medium-, and long-term needs of its member companies. The MPC works closely with the Industrial Liasion Program (ILP), providing specific expert guidance to companies with materials-related needs.

The MPC Industry Collegium provides both a gateway to the broad materials community at MIT and a range of outreach mechanisms that allow industry to derive substantial value from its collaborations and interaction with MIT. The Collegium has created many dynamic modes of knowledge transfer, technology delivery, and personnel exchange. These mechanisms combine the best of academia's intellectual capabilities with industrial engineering practice to solve product, process, and systems problems and implement solutions.

Preproposal exchanges of information can be conducted under non-disclosure agreements to protect proprietary company information and facilitate open discussion.

Membership Benefits -- The MPC Industry Collegium expands upon MIT's traditionally close liaison with industry by providing a direct link between materials science, engineering, and processing research at the university and the short-, medium-, and long-term needs of your company. When your company joins the Collegium, you gain guided access to research at the cutting edge of materials technology across the broad materials community at MIT. The Center acts as the one-stop facilitator between MIT's materials researchers and members of your company, conducting research briefings, visits, and personnel exchanges while also providing novel opportunities for bilateral information exchange.

The key value that Industry Collegium membership provides companies is guided access to MIT faculty. Our staff first works to understand your needs, then sets up interactions with faculty appropriate to those needs. The materials community at MIT is very broad, and the MPC helps you make the most of your time and resources.

MPC provides opportunities for personnel exchanges, whether through extended residence visits for industrial researchers to participate in on-campus projects, or through MIT students and staff working at company sites through the Materials Processing & Manufacturing Institute. One-on-one contact between your personnel and our faculty and students encourages the flow of creative ideas in both directions, and permits your company to follow the professional development of the undergraduate and graduate students who will be the future experts in materials processing. All information or personnel exchanges can be conducted under non-disclosure agreements to protect proprietary information and facilitate open discussion.

As a Collegium member, companies will receive premium access to information via our website, periodic publications, including Materials Research at MIT, an annual review of materials research progress, invitations to workshops and symposia, and opportunities for personnel exchanges. One-on-one contact between your personnel and our faculty, staff, and students encourages the flow of creativity an innovation in both directions. For MIT, interaction with a problem-rich industry drives the thirst to see solutions reach the marketplace. For your company, some of the best minds in the world can be focused on your problems and opportunities. Your company can create and promote cooperative or sponsored research and development programs with knowledgeable experts who are committed to working with industry. In addition, your company can follow the professional development of undergraduate and graduate students, the future experts in materials processingÑand your prospective employees.
