Founded 30 years ago by James R. Melcher in the MIT Electrical Engineering Department, the Continuum Electromechanics Group has been the home of research on such topics as electrostatic precipitation, electrohydrodynamics, electrofluidized particle beds, electrification of insulating media, double-layer phenomenon in polymers and biological tissues, electrostatic swelling in biopolymers, and the bioelectromechanics of cartilage and other connective tissues.
The Continuum Electromechanics Group is now part of the MIT Center for Biomedical Engineering.
