Irwin Winkler

Senior Industrial Liaison Officer

ilo photoDr. Winkler is a Senior Industrial Liaison Officer in the MIT Office of Corporate Relations, where he helps companies identify and engage MIT experts in areas of mutual interest. He brings to this position more than twenty-five years of business and technology experience, including eleven years as an MIT scientist. He also advises start-up companies through the MIT Venture Mentoring Service.

Prior to joining the Office of Corporate Relations, Dr. Winkler was an Associate Director with the consulting firm of Arthur D. Little. Focusing primarily on high tech industries, Dr. Winkler helped to create new lines of business for multinational corporations in North America, Europe, and Asia, and assisted corporate, private, and institutional investors in evaluating diverse investment opportunities. Typical engagements included market assessments, technology assessments, due diligence studies, corporate and business unit strategy, acquisitions, partner searches, technical audits, product development, technology strategy, and expert witness support.

In addition to his corporate experience, Dr. Winkler spent nine years at MIT Lincoln Laboratory as a member of the technical staff. Working in the field of high-energy laser beam propagation and control, he led projects in adaptive and nonlinear optics, and represented the laboratory in fact-finding missions and government advisory panels. He has over 35 publications and conferences, 3 U.S. patents, and has reviewed manuscripts for Optics Letters, IEEE Quantum Electronics, Chemical Physics , and the Journal of American Chemical Society.
