Lunch and Auto-ID Big Data Startup Challenge - Finalist Presentations to Judges
Everywhere you look, consumers are turning to their smartphones and social media to get more value and better inform their shopping experience. The resulting data is creating new opportunities for retailers to better understand the wants and needs of their consumers, to improve the customer experience and ultimately drive more sales. Retail chains are complex ecosystems producing large and diverse data-sets. Object identification technologies like RFID, NFC and barcodes also create new streams of data. And numerous platforms and websites are sprouting up that offer location-based deals and sales promotions for consumers using the myriad data sources. There is tremendous potential for Big Data applications that mine and aggregate these data siloes to improve retailer supply chain efficiencies, and enhance the shopping experience. How can retailers improve the real-time interaction between consumers and goods on the retail floor using mobile? What can be learned to drive sales and profit for retailers ? large and small? How can retailers improve the overall brand experience for consumers? Those are just a few of the questions that should be answered in the Mobile Retail App Challenge!

Big Data and Retail Marketing in a Digital World
No one will dispute the fact that Big Data is transforming retail. Beyond the excitement of new opportunities to engage consumers is the challenge to find creative ways to harness the data deluge. DataXu co-founder and CEO Mike Baker will put Big Data in perspective for retailers, discussing the big trends and top data-driven use cases, and provide a map to help you navigate this new digital world.

3:45 pm

How are smartphones changing the retail purchasing process?
Consumer are today increasingly using their mobile phone when making purchasing decisions. Dr. Christian Floerkemeier is the CTO and Co-Founder of Scandit, a company specializing in product interaction technologies for mobile applications. In this talk, Floerkemeier provides insights into when, where and why consumers interact with consumer products using their smartphone by leveraging Big (Mobile) Data from our Scanalytics platform. With its leading mobile barcode scanning software in use by over a hundred companies in more than 25 countries, Scandit products enable, analyze and monetize mobile product interaction.

Megacity Logistics and Big Data
Megacities ? cities with a population of at least 10 million people ? are increasing in both number and size, and their share of world GDP is expected to grow from about 14% to over 20% in a decade. Most of the 23 megacities that currently exist are located in emerging markets. The presentation will provide an overview of the unique characteristics of freight movement in megacities in emerging markets, focusing on opportunities for novel policy, business and technology approaches to transform future planning and decision making processes.

Big Data Market Overview
Big Data has become a ubiquitous marketing phrase that has been so overused it connotes everything yet means nothing. In my presentation, I define the term Big Data, discuss its origins and provide examples on why I believe Big Data is going to be the dividing line between good and great companies over the next decade. Many people still think about data in very traditional ways, but the onset of the internet, the proliferation of mobile devices and cheap compute are going to fundamentally change the way consumers and corporations do everything. Technology has transitioned from the Enterprise to the Consumer and the next decade will be shaped by the rise of Big Data.

Network Analytics
This session will examine the current role of Big Data specifications in making big data infrastructure services accessible to retailers, their suppliers and their clients.
Network Analytics deals with graph based algorithms to analyze Big data, in terms of interconnections. As it is difficult to analyze all nodes and all interconnections, clustering becomes an important tool. If we can form clusters through efficient (time and quality of clusters) algorithms, we can use them effectively in practical situations. In this talk we discuss label propagation, and game theory based algorithms to detect clusterings under varying conditions. Having formed the clusters we ask the question are there any attributes that are significant in these clusters generated? We validate our algorithms with retail transaction and Facebook data. We discuss the implication in Big Data.

Understanding Road Usage Patterns in Urban Areas
From geolocating retail transactions such as in eWallets to “contactless” payment to in-store checkout systems, where can academia, working with regulators, SDO’s and industry, open new avenues for innovation and information exchange?

We combine the most complete record of daily mobility of two US metropolitan areas based on large scale mobile phone records with detailed GIS data to find hitherto hidden patterns in urban road usage. We measure transient origin destination matrices that allow us to identify for each road segment the few driver sources that generate most of its congestion. Consequently we propose efficient strategies to achieve a significant reduction of the total travel time across the entire road network.

MassTLC Big Data panel - The Big Data Ecosystem ?hot button issues? in building scalable secure API?s
Big data initiatives are cropping up across every industry and market sector. Where are the information layers and synergies to bring this information together so it can be put to meaningful use?

11:15 am

Town Hall style meeting - Big Data – “hot button topics” join Walgreens, Ahold and BJ's Enterprise Architects for their perspectives on Big Data requirements
Startups as well as industry players encouraged to propose specifications/API's for structuring Mobile Retail Commerce data and/or Big Data infrastructure to consume those services.

Systems ranging from physical access control and personnel ID management to retail systems to vehicle systems and smartphone applications are using a variety of Automated Information Data Collection technologies to capture information about the physical world. What stakeholders need to come together to create specifications such that these worlds can communicate? Emphasis on the retail apps in healthcare from Walgreens experience with big data requirements stemming from medication & care plan adherence (biometric devices).
